Going the Whole Hog
A client who operates a small visitor attraction on their beautiful abbey grounds which includes farm animals, recently informed us of an incident involving a visitor and a rather hungry pig.
The story begins in the visitor’s shop where there are various feeds for sale so that patrons may hand-feed the animals as part of their experience. Unfortunately on this occasion, the pig was hungrier than his friendly tourist had anticipated and decided that the man’s hand was part of the tasty treats on offer. The net result of this was that the gentleman involved received a rather nasty bite which required medical attention immediately from the first aiders at the farm, but fortunately no stitches or trip to hospital.
After notifying us of the incident the next day the client required some advice as to how to proceed. Accordingly, we set up a file immediately and obtained all relevant details in case a claim ever arose at a later date. However, never an organisation to sit back and be reactive, we immediately sent one of our fully qualified risk managers from Ford Risk Management onto the case. He contacted the client that same day to offer advice on what could be done to avoid a reoccurrence and to validate the ideas that the client themselves had about minimising the risk
Although this matter still has never transpired as a formal liability claim against our client, it does in fact highlight the efficient and effective relationship between our claims department and risk management, where an immediate response to the insured with sound advice is the order of the day to ensure peace of mind.
